Being that I am the only one in my group who is actively using Edmodo, I took it upon myself to add in an extra element to our tutorial. As an educator, I appreciate hearing about valuable resources from people who have actually used the resource firsthand and can pinpoint what the real advantages of the tool are. For these reasons, I surveyed my students and created a short video to act as a testimonial within our tutorial. For our next group project, we were able to self-select our topic and group mates again. As soon as I saw that Edmodo was one of the suggested topics, I quickly signed up for this topic, as Edmodo plays a big role in my current professional growth goals. I assumed that my classmates who signed up for this particular tutorial project would be individuals who were familiar with Edmodo as well and were looking to share their knowledge with others. As it turns out, I am the only person in my group of four who is actively using Edmodo. Initially this concerned me, but as we have gotten into the planning and division of tasks, I think that all of my group members are motivated and keen to learn more about what Edmodo has to offer educators. There is a great deal that I do not know about this online resource and I am sure that I will benefit from this project. I am also excited about the process that we are taking to get to a polished finished product. We are starting with a basic proposal of our intended goals for our tutorial. We have completed a rationale and overview and we have also outlined the basic shape that our actual tutorial will take. I think that we have a good plan in place to create a useful learning tool in the end. I have included a copy of our tutorial proposal here.
I really appreciate and value the time that we have been given to view all of the other group presentations and to then participate in discussions based on them. I think that the learning that comes out of this type of sharing and discourse is just as important as the outcomes covered by the course content itself. When we submit our projects to the instructor alone, these shared learning opportunities are missed entirely. This experience has served to remind me of the benefits in providing my own students with opportunities to both produce and share their projects with their peers. I have greatly enjoyed viewing all of the group presentations. Some of the topics were ones that I was already familiar with, but the review of the material was worthwhile. I also learned many new things from the presentations as well. As I would like to be able to access these student built resources in the future, I have embedded the various presentations within this blog post.
