ETEC 531: Curriculum Issues in Cultural and Media Studies
Integrating media education and media literacy across the curriculum.
Good writers seamlessly weave the separate lives of their characters and all that unfolds for them in their stories into one cohesive tale. In a similar fashion, media education and media literacy should be interwoven into the fabric of multiple subject areas in the classroom, rather than being taught as isolated entities. This course has taught me the importance of teaching media education and media literacy in a fully integrative fashion. I have also come to realize the value of using controversial topics to engage and push my students’ learning, while at the same time being mindful of what I can and cannot say for my own protection.
