ETEC 532- Vignette #2- The Power of the Virtual Tour
After having spent 14 years away from university, it is very interesting to put my student hat back on, especially while wearing my teacher hat at the same time. Because of the MET program, I have had the opportunity to view my own education and the education that I am providing for my students through a very unique lens. From a student perspective, throughout the MET program I was constantly examining the structure of my courses, the philosophy and approach taken by my instructors and the theory behind the course assignments. Although I already knew the value in providing my students with opportunities to construct their own learning while having both a voice and a choice in selecting their areas of study and project work, I don’t think that I truly understood just how much of an impact this has on the quality of learning until I experienced the situation from the student side of the equation.
I am including this project as an artifact of my learning because I think that it illustrates well the point that I was making in the above paragraph. Because I had both a voice and a choice in this assignment, I believe that my learning experience was greatly enhanced. In this course we completed two vignette assignments and the first vignette paper was much more directive. We were really only given one approach to take in our assessment of the given vignette. I enjoyed the work involved in our Vignette #2 assignment more than I did for Vignette #1 mainly due to the fact that I had a number of options to choose from. Upon reviewing all of the topics that we were allowed to pursue for this task, I was quickly drawn to the topic involving museums and virtual tours. Having experienced both powerful museum tours and virtual field trips firsthand, I wanted to examine the related resources more deeply and take the time to reflect upon their potential power in the classroom. I also enjoyed engaging in discussion with my group mates about their own pursuits into the topics that they selected. I appreciated the use of a peer editor to help me revise my own work prior to submitting it to be graded. I truly do feel that this practice enhances the quality of the finished product. This was a really great learning experience. I have attached a copy of my vignette analysis here.
