ETEC 510- Design Project: Interactive Website
I have included this project as a learning artifact because I learned so much throughout the process of completing this assignment. Up until this point, I had only designed websites to convey basic information. I had not really every considered using a website to create a platform upon which an entire unit of study could be carried out. In the end, we created a very valuable learning tool that can be used by students as a means to work through a Science unit on Simple and Compound machines at their own pace. This truly showed me the potential of a mindfully designed website, while also reinforcing the importance of engaging students in their own learning and in providing them with both choice and voice in their learning pursuits. I have used this resource two years in a row in my classroom and the students absolutely love it. What an excellent learning opportunity this was.
Our final design project was a group assignment. I appreciated the fact that we were given the freedom to construct our own groups based on common areas of interest. After a few initial brainstorming sessions, my group determined that our two overlying goals were as follows:
Our hope and overlying goal for this project was to create a learning resource that would both appeal and cater to a wide range of learners
We wanted the interactive site to challenge and engage learners while facilitating them in constructing their own knowledge at their own pace and gamifying the content to further hook our targeted audience.
We chose a Weebly website as our platform, but enriched the website environment with a wide variety of external links to games, information, videos, quizzes, and even Twitter feeds. Our theme was ‘Mission Possible’ and with the aid of a few Powtoon videos and specially selected graphics and sound files, I really feel as though we accomplished all that we had set out to in our project goals.
